Indeed today Royal College is the heading state funded school in Sri Lanka. The school was established in the British state funded school convention having being named as the Royal College Colombo in 1881 with Royal assent from Queen Victoria and it was one of the first schools to be designated as a national school by the Sri Lankan government in the 1980s. The people of the Royal College is ordinarily known as Royalists. the old young men are known as Old Royalists. The school is subsidized by the Ministry of Education, which selects its Principal. The Principal is the leader of the organization of the College and is aided by a Vice Principal. The school is partitioned into three segments: the grade school (the previous Royal College Preparatory School), center school and the upper school, each one going under a representative foremost (the leader of the elementary school is known as the Headmaster/headmistress).
